    1. I think a lot of buildings in China do this because of their superstitions surrounding the number 4.

    2. You might have a 4th floor, but no access from this elevator. Because that’s the floor for physical plant and maintenance and stuff like that.

      A different elevator has access.

    3. Four is an unlucky number in many Asian cultures. One pronunciation of four in Japanese sounds very close to die or death. In casinos, table games that are popular with Asian players skip the number four on seating arrangements. Very likely this elevator uses that same logic/ superstition.

    4. Chinese elevator.

Cuz 4 is a taboo number, btw, not because of Chinese product quality’s reputation.

I once worked in a hospital that didn’t have a fourth floor. It wasn’t because of superstitions or anything like that, it was simply that the third floor was the height of two floors because it contained all the mechanical stuff. No idea why they didn’t just make the actual hospital floor above the mechanical room 4, but the elevator went from 3 to 5.

    6. If you take the stairs is there a 4th floor that isn’t easily accessible? I’ve seen this in buildings where the regular elevator couldn’t access a specific floor for a very particular reason, but the floor was still there.
