*This elaborate container celebrates Murasaki Shikibu (ca. 970–ca. 1014), the author of The Tale of Genji. While the outer box shows a gold-and-black herringbone design, the inner box features the writer bathed in moonlight, at a desk in Ishiyama Temple in Kyoto, thought to be where Shikibu wrote this classic book. The inner and outer boxes of the container use lacquer, made from the resin of the lac tree, to exquisite effect. The rolled-up blinds beyond the veranda reveal the black night, which contrasts with and heightens the other details, all rendered in sumptuous color.
