Cool picture, looks like a good time. But it must be hard to sing with all that smoke in the air.

I would love to have seen her perform.

Look at that crowd, it must have been fun times. Hard to believe intermingeling at clubs like this with Blacks/Whites was so unique back then. Not like it was hanging out with a bunch of Gay people….THATS A JOKE people . See how the sense of humor is running this morning. Also interesting is the amount of Cigarette/Cigar smoke that is visible in the air and everybody dressed in Suits. I don’t miss the smoke for sure but things did seem more “classy” back then in how everybody dressed.
Imagine the dude that just so happened to be hanging out, and not there to see music. How amazing of a surprise must that have been.
Also, I’m olde enough to remember smoking in bars. I miss it, but at the same time, I never wanna experience it again. The smell of my clothes the next day was always gross. And my skin felt nasty too. Like being covered in soot.

Lady Day is amazing, but Cafe Society was not the first club that allowed white and black patrons in NYC. The [Savoy Ballroom](https://www.curationist.org/editorial-features/article/a-tale-of-two-harlems:-the-legacy-of-jazz-and-racism-at-the-cotton-club#the-savoy-ballroom-a-harlem-club-for-harlemites), notable among them.
