I believe they were hallucinating and had scurvy among other medical issues. Something to do with their canned foods being poorly sealed and leaking plus the cans were causing lead poisoning If I remember correctly.

It’s crazy how some of the ships they sent there to try to find them/rescue them ended up needing rescue themselves. That place is brutal.

This is one of the only stories in history that I actively choose to avoid reading about again because of how horrifying the details and theories are regarding what happened to the men during the expedition. It’s really chilling
