I have visited a handful of rock churches in my life and I must say that artistically speaking they are among the most beautiful achievements of human culture for their time, those frescos really leave you speechless.
Colors are usually vibrant in a way that differs from the classical religious art we are accustomed to in traditional churches found later on in history, and they are literally decorated with just art and nothing more.
They definitely rival against medieval romanic and gothic churches found in the mediterranean in terms of colours and frescos artistry in general in my opinion, but i am an uneducated tourist.
