Vietnam ended a millennium of near continuous Chinese domination in the 10th century. Almost as soon as independence began so too did conflict with Champa, a nation in what is modern-day southern and central Vietnam.
Over the centuries, Vietnam survived multiple Cham invasions (and launching their own), Mongol Invasions, Chinese Invasions (including a brief period of Ming Dynasty control), and launched their own wars south into Champa and Khmer lands.
Champa slowly crumbled and became a vassalt state to Vietnam in 1471. The last Cham polity was annexed by Vietnam in 1834. The Khmer Empire weakened and became a power vacuum where the Thais and Viets fougut wars/proxy wars for power. Cambodia was kept alive as a buffer state between Thailand and Vietnam.
Vietnamese expansion ended with the invasion and colonization by France. However, fear of Vietnamese expansion was renewed in 1978-1979 when Vietnam invaded Cambodia and toppled the Khmer Rouge (ending the Cambodia Genocide). Thailand harbored the Khmer Rouge in camps within Thailand, allowing the Khmer Rouge to continue operating throughout the 80s and even the early 90s after Vietnam withdrew from Cambodia.
