My grandma was the epitome of elegance. She passed in 1993. Everyone still remembers her as the most forward-looking and stylish lady in our community: the first to smoke cigarettes in public, to wear pants, and to own a color-TV. She was a polyglot who spoke Bulgarian, German, English, and Spanish with a Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) accent. I vividly remember and miss the comforting touch and smell of her hands, so soft and fragrant from cigarette smoke and perfume.
