Context; The Australian Immigration Minister of the late 1940s had a colourful quote list.

In a speech to parliament he remarked “there are many Wongs in the Chinese community, but I have to say — and I am sure that the honorable Member for Balaclava will not mind doing so — that ‘two Wongs do not make a White’

      He would later remark that:

      >I am proud of my white skin, just as a Chinese is proud of his yellow skin, a Japanese of his brown skin, and the Indians of their various hues from black to coffee-coloured. Anybody who is not proud of his race is not a man at all. And any man who tries to stigmatise the Australian community as racist because they want to preserve this country for the white race is doing our nation great harm… I reject, in conscience, the idea that Australia should or ever can become a multi-racial society and survive

      He also stated that:

      >he was “appalled” at the thought and was “opposed to the creation of a chocolate-coloured Australia”

Yet for all this aboriginal Australians held a special place in his heart:

      >of Indigenous Australians, Calwell wrote: “If any people are homeless in Australia today, it is the Aboriginals. They are the only non-European descended people to whom we owe any debt. Some day, I hope, we will do justice to them.

    2. Where is the lie tho.

Edit: It is also like saying that medieval king were insane for thinking they have power from god and that not a single soul on this Earth thought that. Calwell was labor delegate, so I doubt his views views were significantly more radical than average.

    3. Calwell? *He* said that? I’m shocked tbh, considering he was a major driving force in the massive influx of post-WW2 immigration Australia had. Many people may only remember him for his “Populate or perish” quote trying to convince Australians to accept immigration, even though I’m pretty sure Hughes coined the phrase. He also created the term “New Australians” to describe immigrants, as opposed to derisory nicknames (e.g. the now endeared ‘wogs’).

Maybe he only had a thing for European immigrants? Considering most of them were Brits, Italians, Hungarians and other Eastern Europeans.

    4. I feel like most of the world was still casually using racial slurs against most Asians in 1947.

    5. I just remember the 90s t-shirt. “Wong Brothers Laundry: Two Wongs make it white!”
