      1453: The city of Constantinople, the last bit of Roman territory, had its army defeated by Ottoman invaders led by Mehmed II. The emperor was never seen again after entering battle and Mehmed gave his soldiers a day to enter the city and do whatever they wanted before he entered, with the soldiers killing a significantly large amount of people and destroying much of the architecture. Upon entering the city, Mehmed renamed it Istanbul and it was from then on permanently Ottoman territory.
