The point of history is that we are able to look back and learn from it.
“Dont judge them by your standards” is silly because how else are we supposed to develop our understanding?

Unpopular opinion but I don’t think we can blame columbus for the spreading of diseases.

Well, he was arrested for mistreating the colonists. That’s usually not the complaint people have about him today.

A rapist, pedo and slave trader, Columbus was horrible by any standard.

Yah, it’s always funny when someone makes that argument and then you look at writing from the time, from kings and monks and shit, and they say “Yah, we arrested him because he did horrid shit by our standards. And, independent of that, I think he is a fuckhead with no morals.”

Crossing the Atlantic with 15th century naval technology took balls.

Someone on this sub the other said we shouldn’t try to do this to Heyreddin Barbarossa, notorious pirate, coastal raider and slaver.

Thanks for calling out PragerU specifically. They have spread a lot of misinformation that can go over people’s heads.

How shitty do you have to be, for the Colonial Spanish to arrest you?

Colombus, the guy who was called a monster in his own time. I think we have an excuse to judge him if they did as well.

On a sort of side note, I’ve always wondered if he actually did realize he had not found the West Indies but North America and only stood by his ‘discovery’ since it would mean ending in hot water.

He, and if I remember correctly his son too, was also shit at managing settlements

I’m fairly certain we have evidence that Columbus wasn’t actually that brutal to the natives.
Columbus’ misdeeds were exaggerated in English sources as anti Spanish propaganda. And then the actions of others, even after his death have been attributed to him.
Columbus wasn’t a shining paragon of good. But he wasn’t some blood thirsty monster. His son Diego tho…. yeah that guy was fucked up.

Does anybody actually believe that we shouldn’t judge historical figures? I thought we got over that nonsense.
“You shouldn’t judge them because you don’t know how we will be judged” damn right we’re gonna be judged. I hope future generations judge us for all the stupid shit we are doing. How the fuck else are we supposed to progress?
