15ft surge at the dock would either propel his boat over those buildings or smash it to smithereens – perhaps both. What a waste of a life. Perhaps he feels he has no other option.

Dude is either a moron (definitely a moron) or is gonna be the last boat shrimping after the storm. It won’t be easy in a sailboat but he’s got a leg up on the competition if he does survive.

    3. It sucks that stories like this are framed as something interesting or cool when in reality he will die and so many other disabled people who couldn’t evacuate due to many reasons.

      Its disheartening to see this.

    4. So long Captain Dan, I fail to see what motivates your hands. Goodbye restless night, you know I love Dan Dare but I couldn’t make his flight… so long.. lyrics to Dan Dare by Elton John.

What really sucks is that these bad decisions usually make others have to go into harms way to affect a rescue.

    6. As long as he recognizes that no one is going to come save him, then you know what I respect the send.

Crazy to volunteer for one of the most horrible and terrifying deaths imaginable. It won’t be quick.

That will not end well. When I was young and stupid (ok..I’m still stupid) I body-surfed in hurricane surf from a hurricane that was 100 miles off-shore. The ocean is always s deadly force. Hurricanes just make it extra special deadly. That sailboat won’t last minutes. once the hurricane gets close.

    9. Is he at least live streaming this decision throughout the hurricane so we can cheer him on from safety?

He is still in a safer place than someone trying to ride out the storm surge in their house. Small sailboats are surprisingly sturdy.
Note I didn’t say he is safe.

    11. “Everything looks fine and pretty right now so I’m sure everything will be just okay and fine and pretty tonight or early tomorrow morning.”

      – Lt Dan’s brain, probably

Rarely do we get to learn of a Darwin award winner while they’re still alive.

    13. He said something like “Well if the water goes up the boat floats.” As if there aren’t hurricane force winds and massive waves that will capsize the boat.

    14. Ok, I’m from Ohio so I could be wrong because I’ve seen it on the internet, but, don’t those little boats get tossed around like toothpicks? Banging against each other or the pier, or just losing it’s mooring and ending up as debris in the flooding?
