This actually happened.
During the initial stages, Spaniards pranced around waving a proclamation from the pope about how the land now belong to the Spanish crown and all it’s inhabitants are subjects to do with as the crown pleases and any opposition will be given no quarter.
The thing is, this proclamation was written and read in Spanish (Castilian) and thus, absolute gibberish to most of the natives. They didn’t know wtf they were being read much less oppose it. That didn’t stop the Spaniards from giving them no quarter tho.

Yeah, that’s why missionaries learned native languages, or transcripted the first quechua grammar back in 1560. Because the forced the Spanish language to the natives…
