Context: In July 1807 Napoleon’s Chief of Staff, Alexandre Berthier, organized a rabbit hunt for Napoleon and his entourage to a park he owned within Paris. The goal was to make a good hunt, and with rabbits being a commonly hunted animal in events like this, he arranged 1,000 rabbits to be brought. However, when the rabbits were released en masse, the rabbits, rather than running away and being hunted, swarmed the entourage, forcing the group’s retreat, and quite a humiliating loss for Napoleon.
