The Tampa Bay area’s main hospital and only trauma center is built on an island at sea level

    1. I hope everyone gets out of there and is ok. This is hard to watch and I’d never live in Florida.

I can’t imagine having property there right now.

      Sorry Floridians…please stay safe.

    2. Just a quick check leftists. Are we all ready with our weather remote control units.

Nod or a wink to confirm.

That seems like a bad idea but I’m told Tampa is immune to hurricanes.

    4. Geez…did they evacuate the place? The Hurrican has a good chance of hitting that place directly.

    5. Who thought this was a good idea? It’s like the people who built their house on the slow moving landslide in California… Oh no! This critical piece of infrastructure is on an island? At sea level? In a part of our world that routinely get’s hit with severe storms and hurricanes? They’ve apparently been fortunate to not be hit with a massive storm like this in 100 years.

I really do hope every has evacuated safely from there. Because as a few other people pointed out, if the hurricane makes landfall where it’s predicted too, that hospital likely won’t exist anymore.

They built a temporary seawall around it for Helene. It held back water about four feet above ground level. Looked like it could take another 8-10 feet. It probably is still up. Kind of lucky in a weird way.

    7. Isn’t pretty much most of Florida at sea-level?
It always struck me as an extra large, extra humid version of the Netherlands.

    8. If Democrats have the smarts to control the weather then wouldn’t they be the best to run the country?

    9. Well the first 2 stories are boned. 15’ storm surge is no joke. I hope they evacuated everyone possible.

    10. Tampa has long been top of the list of worst places for a real monster hurricane to hit. If you go to FEMA and NWS contingencies, like the ones they brief the governors and presidents with, this exact scenario is top of the list.

The residents aren’t used to getting hit, especially with a monster Milton. The topography is especially vulnerable to storm surge, the buildings aren’t built for it, and so on.

This is literally a worst case scenario come to life. Hoping everybody who can get out safe is doing so.

The entire State of Florida is located in a swamp. Where do you expect them to build a hospital? How high above sea level do you expect a Tampa hospital to be?

    12. The highest point in Tampa Bay is 48 ft above sea level, so there isn’t many spots much better.

And they have how much flood insurance?

      *crickets*

      I thought so.

but do go on getting ready to blame anything that isn’t money for why this happened.

    14. Hope they have that waterproof fencing around the hospital. I saw that another hospital used it during Helene and it held.

    15. Geez and I thought two hospitals on the same side of Joplin MO was about as dumb as city planners could get. We all saw how that ended up.
