What was commonly accepted as true for the first few days after the shooting was that a shard of glass or other small piece of debris from the gun shot was what just barely nicked a tiny part of his ear and that was what made him bleed, but then the story that it was in fact a bullet that hit his ear kept growing and spreading and despite many experts calling out that it couldn’t have been a bullet that story just became accepted as truth for some reason.
So no this FBI statement is not as a surprise as we all originally knew it was not a bullet that hurt him.

It was no bullet that hit his ear. It’s more likely that his fingernail cut the thin skin of his ear when he brought his hand up to it. I don’t know if anyone has ever gotten a small cut on the cartilage of their ear before, but it bleeds like a motherfucker from the smallest of nicks and takes a while to stop. It also explains how only a couple days later his ear is fine with zero marks. Having the comically large “maxi pad” of a bandage on it was for his (clown) show.
