A huge herd of elephants in Tsavo East National Park in Kenya in 1976. It was one of the last herds of this size observed.
From the beginning of the 20th cen. to the 1970s, the elephant population decreased 7.5 times and amounted to approximately 1.3 million.
Currently it’s around 400000.

I have seen similar elephant photos from the early 1900s in South Africa.
Also on the topic of South Africa, the largest herd of springbok ever recorded was a remarkable natural phenomenon known as the “trekking” or migration of springbok in the 19th century. During this period, springbok herds in southern Africa would gather in astonishingly large numbers. Some historical accounts suggest that these herds, known as “trekbokken,” could number in the millions.
One of the most famous records describes herds so vast that they reportedly took several days to pass a single point. While exact numbers are difficult to verify, estimates range from several hundred thousand to over a million springbok during these mass migrations. These enormous gatherings occurred before human activities such as hunting and farming fragmented their habitats.
We don’t have that many Springbuck anymore
We also used to have massive herds of Quagga – which are now extinct

They would fuck some serious shit up. They’d go through a medium sized forest in a week, it would look like a hurricane had destroyed the place.
I didn’t know that. That would be a bit scary if a herd that size came through town.

I was reading about W D M Bell only yesterday.
He was only one individual and shot over 1,000 elephants during his lifetime. He was considered a ‘gentleman adventurer’ in his day- I wonder if he would be remorseful today if he could see what his actions contributed to.
