CONTEXT: I heard a story about how Pepsi was very popular in the Soviet Union and how the Soviet government was paying Pepsi vodka in exchange for the American made drink. However, Pepsi became so popular that there was not enough vodka to exchange it for. The solution was for a number of old warships in the Soviet Navy to be given to Pepsi. The Soviets were looking to get rid of old ships and build more modern ones. So, Pepsi got 17 attack submarines, 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer, and 1 frigate. Pepsi scrapped all these ships immediately and got a fair amount of money.
This is where the stretch comes in. Modern social media exaggerated this into saying that Pepsi had the 6th largest navy in the world, which would be in no way true. Though Pepsi got a large number of ships, even larger that India, France, and maybe even Britain, these ships were basically post-WWII vintage and would in no way be useful except maybe for being used as massive floating advertisement boards.

Wait I thought it was Coca Cola with the best Air Force. I could have sworn they had a bunch of Soviet helicopters because coke was so popular there they had to sell military stuff to pay for it

It’s also interesting to look at the amount Pepsi paid into the Russian space program to get the first ad in space. Those wacky Russians were Pepsi mad
