PRETENDING to believe the lies gives them reason to hate and rage against their political enemies.
Without invoking Godwin, the German people didn’t actually believe that the Jewish people were eating babies or any of that ridiculous bullshit, but it gave a chance to hate the Jewish people while trying to look justified.
