The statue began construction in 1847 and finished in 1854 when it was [inaugurated ](https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_XIV_Johans_staty#/media/Fil:The_Unveiling_of_the_Equestrian_Statue_of_Carl_XIV_Johan_of_Sw._in_1854_(Carl_Stefan_Bennet)_-_Nationalmuseum_-_21790.tif)at slussen where it stayed until 2015 when during the endless renovations of Slussen the statue was [moved](https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_XIV_Johans_staty#/media/Fil:Karl_XIV_Johans_staty_Slottsbacken_2015.jpgto) outside the royal palace and in 2018 it was once again inaugurated by Carl XVI Gustaf in its new permanent spot. Making it the second statue of Karl XIV Johan placed outside a royal palace the other being in [Oslo](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Karl_Johan_monument_in_Oslo#/media/File:%22Die_Hauptresidenz_der_K%C3%B6nige_von_Norwegen%22._02.jpg).

Fun fact after the statue was finished Bernadottes widow queen Desiree during her common wagon tours through Stockholm would often stop at the statue and remark “*Oh, qu’il est beau*” (Oh, how beautiful he is).
