    1. Drochshaol (“the bad life”), known as The Great Famine or Irish Potato Famine, was a period of starvation, mass death and mass emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852. It was caused by a blight that wreaked havoc across Europe, but due to British policies in Ireland was greatly exacerbated there. The population of Ireland was more than halved, and has still not recovered as of 2024.
