    1. I’m wandering how Cold War Cuba was able to sustain large military expeditions in Africa

Humiliating apartheid South Africa & tipping the scales in the Ogaden war

    2. The US and USSR on their way to financially support random nations like Goat- semen- forgettable- Stan just to to prevent them from allying the other superpower:

Cuba also exports its medical personnel and uses them like slave labor. They have also sent their security services to Venezuela to keep the subsidized oil coming. Throughout its post-Batista era Cuba has punched above its weight internationally.

    4. being prosperous means shit when your own country cant enjoy the fruits of their own labor

    5. I mean of course they were, they traded with the USSR a lot and well the USSR lost so their biggest trading partner was gone.

They exported all their sugar to the USSR. After the USSR ceased to exist they lost the market. Plenty of cheaper options.

    7. Oh wow, an island nation needs trade to sustain itself? Who could’ve seen that one coming

    8. I had to read a section of mountain beyond mountains for a class, im kind of curious how accurate is the doctor statistic and managing poverty quote about cuba.

Idk dude not being able to trade with anyone for like 60 years kinda fucks your whole economy

    10. Damn it’s almost like their massive neighbour and the main trading partner for the entire region has been embargoing them out of spite for decades
