    1. During the occupation of France, it was quite interesting the relation between the French and the foreign troops, who were recruited (either forced or volunteer) from central Asia. Tatars, Turks, Azerbaijanis, or Georgians were recruited from those regions; they represented some 150,000 soldiers in occupied France; more would be occupying other territory in Europe.

Due to their facial features, they were called “Mongols” or Tartars by most of the French citizens. It’s worth noting that the “Mongols” had a terrible reputation as they were stationed in a region deemed “infested by bandits/terrorists (Maquis), and due to their past experience in Bielorussia and Yugoslavia, they were renown for their effectivness and brutality and particularly targeted women.

During the operation Dragoon, foreigners were the bulk of the German army; during one engagement, the Goumiers were completely surprised to see that their prisoners were not Germans but recruits from central asia; in another instance, 400 Indians were captured by Legionnaires.

Poles, Czechs, Russians, etc. were mostly freed and incorporated into the foreign Legion.
