Lightning isn’t striking the volcano. The lightning is coming from the volcano, or well it’s plume.

“And on the steps of Mt Doom, a last alliance of elves and men fought for the freedom of Middle Earth…”

    4. Lightning didn’t strike the volcano, the lightning was generated by the volcano’s eruption itself.
Volcanoes cause lightning separate from the kind of lightning we see in the atmosphere. When we have an explosive eruption, ash, which is electrostatically charged, is thrown into the atmosphere. The differences in charge across the plume that’s generated, create lightning.
