    1. Back in those days, an asylum was a safe place where you were spared the horrific abuses of the ‘Bedlam houses’. This dear lady looks well cared for and rather happy.

    2. In that day, men could put their wives in the lunatic asylum for just about anything. Many totally sane women (and Black slaves/free Black men and women and natives) were put in these places and never let out.

      it is really interesting to tell how hard the times were for that woman just by looking at her eyes in a picture from 170 years ago
