This is every bit as cool as Jim Morrison singing “higher” when explicitedly told not to. Or Elvis Costello singing “Radio Radio” instead of “Less than Zero” on SNL.

Iron Maiden on German TV in the 80s. They were told to lip sync and they ran around the stage swapping instruments through the whole song. 😂

Check out The Box Tops doing The Letter totally clowning to a lip synch

There’s a funny video of Sweet on Top of the Pops from sometime in the mid-70s singing Fox on the Run, and there are a couple of times where the guitar player intentionally (he is looking into the camera) doesn’t play. At one point he is playing a synthesizer with the camera focusing on his hands, and he just stops playing and does like an air keyboard playing thing into the camera.

From what I’ve read, Michelle Phillips was very adept at putting things in her mouth (and other places as well).

Anytime mama and the papas come up it just reminds me of what John Phillips did to his daughter

Yeah, that’s a good one.

They did this because previous bands would cuss when playing live.

I remember there as a video of Nirvana intentionally playing the wrong instruments when asked to do the same once.

Even as I kid I knew, with multiple background voices and instruments you weren’t seeing be performed, unplugged guitars and such.
