    1. Allegedly around 583 BCE, the Greek historian Herodotus wrote about a war that broke out between the Medes (predecessors to the Persians), and the Lydians which ended up spanning across five years. On the sixth year, they were engaged in a battle at the Halys River when it was accounted that “Just as the battle was growing warm, day was on a sudden changed into night.” This was most likely due to a solar eclipse, and both sides promptly stopped fighting and made peace agreements out of fear of divine intervention.
