Since no one has mentioned it yet: I have to point out that today’s conservatives would’ve been yesterday’s Tories. In other words, about half of American colonists in the 1770s were for preserving the status quo and loyal to the crown, just as the Trump cult now wants to keep us cemented in the past and consolidate power in the hands of one person. Meanwhile, the patriots, those fighting *against* the crown, were children of the enlightenment—they believed in rejecting the past and building a nation on fundamentally liberal principles: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not to mention self-determination, separation of church and state, and the rule of law.
