Indulgences are a remission of sins that are already forgiven and serve to remove the temporal punishment. In other words, indulgence serves to shorten your time in Purgatory and can be done trough prayer, charity and until council of Trident banned it by paying money for a cause. Luther was bitching about indulgences sold to provide money to build new St. Peters basilica, and helping to build a church gives you better chances to go to heaven. Unlike protestants we catholics dont think that just believing in God is enough to go to heaven. Faith without work is dead.Â
