Even if it is gas (it could be diesel), it’s almost impossible to ignite it with just a cigarette. There’s tons of YouTube videos of people debunking that myth. It really needs either an open flame or a hot spark to ignite.
That said, it’s still smart to be safe and not smoke around gasoline pumps. I think this rule actually came about because they didn’t want people flicking the lighter right by the nozzle.

I’ve put out cigarettes in gas as a party trick to prove it’s not a hot enough ignition source on its own. Even after puffing up a giant cherry it doesn’t ignite.

Actually the fumes are much more flammable than the pooled gasoline on the ground. So smoking her cigarette has a much better chance of lighting the fumes than if she dropped it directly into the liquid gas on the ground. Either way it’s not a good idea.

I’ve tried to light gas with a cigarette many times, and never could. I dont think it’s even possible.
