Interesting, what would they use as a light source back then? It would have to be pretty bright right?

These things are a marvel of engineering! I saw one of these in California. Apparently they could only be manufactured in Europe, and they were so heavy and fragile that they had to be shipped completely submerged in fish oil. When it arrived in America they sold the fish oil. Resourceful
