What’s the point here? The 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Charlemagne was a Waffen-SS unit formed from French collaborationists. The 5th Waffen-SS Wiking Division of the SS was made up of Norwegians, Danes, Icelanders, Finns, Estonians, Dutch, Flemish, Walloons and Swiss. The 11th Waffen-SS Nordland Division of the SS was made up of Swedes, Danes and Norwegians. The 13th Waffen-SS Division of the SS Handschar was made up of Bosnians, Croats, and Albanians. The 34th Waffen-SS Division of the SS Landstorm-Nederland was made up of Dutch… etc.

I do find the lack of context in this recent controversy quite funny. As if the Ukrainians at the time didn’t have millions of reasons to hate the soviets and probably saw joining the Germans as the only way to get back at the people who had just been genociding them a decade prior.
These Ukrainian young guys didn’t join the Nazis because they were evil, but because they cared about their homeland.

Idiots had no idea that the nazis would have gassed them just for being slavs. The ‘Lebensraum’ plan included Ukrainian lands.

Honestly I don’t blame a lot of people for joining the nazis in occupied Eastern Europe, at least in the beginning. The Soviets were oppressing them and now a new foreign force had come to their land, it wasn’t even the first time the Germans had come to their lands. It’s a lot like the Baltics as well. Quite tragic really.
Doesn’t excuse the crimes of the collaborators but if you try to see it from their perspective the Nazis were probably a better bet. Man the 40s were fucked…

The fact that some Ukrainians were persuaded to side with Germany tells you more about the horrors of Stalinism and the Holodomor famine than about Ukrainians. Read any book by historians Tinothy Snyder or Anne Applebaum.
