Ever since that HBO interview a few years back, the one that produced the meme of the interviewer looking befuddled at the charts he was handed, he has avoided anything that is in a softball. He had his ass handed to him so hard in that interview as well as in the debate with Kamala that his handlers are probably well aware that, the more exposure he gets, the fewer voters he can mobilize on his behalf.
Hell, it could be that his public appearances and his foibles are leading to anyone outside of his primary base to vote against him or (for some GOPers) just forego voting at all
