Context: James Cook was a famous English explorer of the 18th century, credited with the discovery of the Islands of Hawaii. When he first made contact with the native people, he was treated well as he arrived during the celebration of the fertility god Lono. When he and his men eventually left to continue their journey, they ran into a storm that damaged their ship. They limped back to Hawaii and demanded that the locals help with reconstruction. The natives obviously said no. Then both parties started stealing stuff from each other, ultimately culminating in James Cook attempting to hold the Island Chief Kalani’ōpu’u hostage until the natives cooperated. The natives then killed Cook and some of his men. They burned his body and kept some of the bones for themselves, leading some to believe that they had eaten him. The remaining crew was allowed to leave with most of Cook’s remains.
