Background : After his father had ruled Paraguay as a dictator for about 20 years until his death in 1862 and actually made the country quite prosperous Francisco Solano Lopez became Paraguay‘s 35th president and set out to make it one of the continents leading powers.For this he chose Brazil as his target.In 1865 he attacked Brazil with a well equipped Prussian trained army which however was led by incompetent generals.To add to that in Argentina general Mitre wins the civil war and in Uruguay an anti-Lopez government comes into power and the Triple alliance is formed against Paraguay.At the end of the war Paraguy lost half it‘s territories and most of it‘s population of 1.2 million as towards the tail end of the war Lopez had sent out children and old men to fight his war.
