    1. Context: Upper Egypt appears below Lower Egypt on a map because the names of the regions refer to the flow of the Nile River, not cardinal directions. The Nile River flows from the highlands of East Africa northwards to the Mediterranean Sea, so Upper Egypt is actually higher up than Lower Egypt.

    2. Lived in central and northern Florida and I can confirm that the further up you go, the more redneck it gets.

      Lower Canada, modern-day Quebec, is more north than Upper Canada, modern-day Ontario, due to how the St. Lawrence River flows.

      Likewise, Right-bank Ukraine was historically western Ukraine while Left-bank Ukraine was historically eastern Ukraine, since the Dnieper flows south

    4. Extra fun fact! The Nile and the Saint John’s River, in North East Florida, both flow south to North, a rare feature in northern hemisphere rivers of their size.
