Soil is porous. The water is absorbed by the soil and replaced by air. Since it’s lighter than the water, the air naturally rises to the surface.

note : this was found on mountain walk very high above sea level with no super close bodies of water, but it had also rained over a few days before i went on this walk. this was just simply found along the walking path.
