Better yet, imagine the Civil War that would ensue if the judge was appointed by Obama (since this federal judge was appointed by Trump).

This is a simple matter of equality and fairness.

This should not be happening in America in 2024.

#We cannot afford more of these Trump judges. They are overt oppressors.

I’m glad people at least recognize the overt racism that these types of school and public places policies have

That wasn’t the case when I was a child at all

    3. Let’s lay off the kings and queens bullshit.

That’s kinda the source of oppression is people wanting to be fucking monarchs.

I see this as a question of forced conformity and groupthink. Regardless what ethnicity you are, there have always been places that want their members to have a certain look and exhibit certain behavior. Without any practical need for it. They sought to remove individuality and to promote groupthink. And just as long there have been people who fought this. Despite popular belief clothes or hairstyles don’t make the man. Giving up your individuality is giving up an element of freedom.

Who has the right to decide what you do, wear, or believe? You. How much control do you want to give others over you? Why do schools get away with dictating dress code? What is the value of conformity in this case?

Time to recognize that different is not the same as bad.

    5. This poor child is being prevented from his education because of hair. I used to get docked on my evaluation because I refused to report dress code. A child’s education is more important than their hair or belly button showing.

I thought Darryl was requesting that he go to the same school that punished him for his locs while the case was still going and be protected and they said no.

I don’t understand why he would even wanna go back to that school.

I have only gone to private school so I don’t understand. If the policy regarding hair is in the school’s code of conduct, why is the school wrong?

White people aren’t connected to their hair as much, so I don’t really think the outcome would be the same.

    9. Pretty sure students of all colors have had to adhere to basic dress codes for centuries. Not sure what the policy is in this situation or if it’s racially targeted but acting like white kids never has a dress code is insanely dumb

    10. The rules are doing exactly what they were intended to: discourage students of color from attending the school

    11. I worked for a grocery store in a rural area in the south back in the 90’s in a college town and I could tell who wouldn’t get hired based on their outward appearances. They only wanted us if it looked like we would be in the main house. It was disheartening and disappointing lesson I had to learn in real time. My dad grew up in rural Mississippi but was military so I grew up in a diversity bubble. College in the south made me grow up.

    12. I’m mad for him. Nobody should be forced to cut their hair against their will and I say this as a woman whose wavy hair is approaching my knees. His hair is his right and the state shouldn’t be denying him an education over it.

Ok so this is super fucked up, but I think that in addition to racism, homophobia/transphobia is also to blame. He can’t wear his hair like this, because boys or any race aren’t allowed to wear long hair. They aren’t allowed to wear: dresses/skirts, hair accessories, make up or nail polish, jewelry, or have any facial hair ( which isn’t phobic but super fucking weird). Why is a school district able to determine how a child lives their life, this isn’t like a military school… They can’t quit and study somewhere else. This is so fucked up. Like either have a school wide uniform, or let kids where what they want if it’s not offensive. Also I feel like the no hair covering rule must have religious exceptions but who knows.

That being said I do think they have a sex discrimination perspective that they can pursue. Let’s hope that goes somewhere.

    14. When the indigenous were put into concentration camps, especially children, the first step was to cut our hair and remove something that gave us a visual of our identity. This is no different and the result of being black in a no black zone. I hope this white christian craziness doesn’t prevail, but if it does I hope I live long enough to see the results of when they start turning on each other, because history teaches us they always do. So many of those that think they are safe will learn quickly they aren’t white enough, or evangelical enough, or christian quite enough.
