Not to bring unfunny into /r/funny, but I work with school music departments, and tons of districts have ended their elementary school band programs, leaving the kids to not start playing until they’re in middle school, arguably the worst time to start a complicated new thing while also trying to navigate all the bullshit of not being in elementary school any more. Middle School/Junior High used to be where you started to hear some shockingly good sounds, but now it’s mostly what you hear here.

That’s the perfect length for that song

Hot cross buns is pretty much the first song anyone learns. They’re not bad players… they’re brand new.

Considering that Elementary school band is largely nonexistent now, they sound pretty good for likely their very first performance 4 weeks after first touching their instruments.
Obviously beginning band. Give them a break; gotta start somewhere.

I think all middle school recitals sound like this. My daughter’s did. You have the “good” kids and the ones like me that aren’t at all musical.

That’s exactly how I started. Sounding like crap playing Hot Cross Buns. It gets better year over year. Soon hopefully he will carry it into high school and the band will sound absolutely amazing.

Oh, they are bad. Coming from a musician who learned flute in middle school.

I used to be in band from the 6th grade until the end of my 8th. played the saxophone by learning the basics early on in the 6th grade but because I never practiced outside of school, I forgot everything by the end of the summer break. Went on winging every song we ever played after that but somehow never got called out.
When it was time to enter high-school I figured it was for the best that I stopped playing lol

They sound like the ” band ” from nightmare before christmas trying to do the christmas carols. I hope they all had fun at least.

My schools music program consisted of listening to car stereos as they drove past the school. They will probably sound a lot better at the end of the year, I would do a comparison video of their first performance vs. their last year. It might not make R/funny, but it may fit into R/awesome.

My middle school age son that plays the trumpet and tuba says that this performance is hot garbage. I reminded him that he sounded like that last year though.
