It’s pretty crazy. At one time or another you were a heretic if you believed basic facts like that witchcraft doesn’t exist or Earth revolves around the Sun.

    2. Gnosticism is fun! I visited the so-called Cathar castles (they didn’t actully build them) this summer, it was awesome 🙂

    3. That’s NOT what Cathars believed. Cathars believed there is an evil version of God who rules the material world as an equal to God and that they combat that evil through orgies.

    4. Actually Cathars believed that there were 2 Gods, not 1.

They elevated Satan to be the god of all evil, making him equal with God; who, according to them, was merely the God of all good.

The reason that this is heretical is that God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, and necessarily created the angel Lucifer, now known as Satan.

Evil is not a force opposing Good, but rather it is the absence of the Good. Evil is the opposition to God and his Way, meaning Evil is opposed to justice, mercy, compassion, logic, purity, and faithfulness.

The Cathars should not have been killed, but were rightly excommunicated.

    5. It’s amazing how all these Cathar glazing memes leave out the fact that the church didn’t react violently to them until the Cathars killed their missionaries.

    6. Have you read Régine Pernoud on the question?
Catharism implies the belief that anything material is evil, that mariage and procreation are bad, and that taking any pleasure of any type is wrong.
The Catholic church repressed it strongly indeed, but pretending their philosophy was leading to hippy paradise is far from the truth!

    7. Untrue, Cathars belief was that all material world is evil, being created by evil god, and escaping to immaterial world was their goal. Contemporary sources cite them calling children demons and even avoiding sexual contact to not create any more material life.

Simping for heresy is appaling in this sub.

Being that the Cathars are not present and so cannot refute any of the accusations made against them, let’s focus on the evidence that we have that speaks against the good character of the Roman Catholic Church🙏

I mean, we don’t know if the cathars existed as cohesive group. For many historians, it’s possible or even likely that they were a series of.less-than-orthodox local beliefs that got grouped together in popular consciousness and became a sort of boogeyman.
