Despite being set up quite well in life, Samuel Adams was a very poor businessman, becoming bankrupt, becoming not bankrupt, and bankrupt again.

In an effort to have a steady job, he was elected as tax collector for Boston in 1765. He was extremely lenient, and in his first year collected only. Very small percentage of the proper taxes.

He would serve 9 years as tax collector, publishing an incredible amount of political articles under dozens of pseudonyms in the meantime.
