Fun Vintage Coffee Facts: The name “Sanka” is a portmanteau of the French words for “without caffeine”. When it was first introduced in the US, they tried calling it “Dekafa” before going back to the French brand name. Sanka was originally decaffeinated using benzene – which causes cancer.
Bonus: The vintage coffee brand “Yuban” is also a portmanteau truncated from “Yuletide Banquet,” because the special blend was originally just for guests of and holiday gifts from the Arbuckle Brothers, NYC coffee magnates. Yuban was the OG “Christmas Blend” coffee.
