Turns out this summer I just casually grabbed a snail with enough venom to kill a couple hundred people

    1. Just a bit of extra context: this is a textile cone snail. Cone snails are a group of several hundred snails that can fire a venom loaded harpoon tooth. This is used both for hunting and self defense, and the snails tend to be pretty loose on the trigger in the latter. This is not the most venomous kind, that would be geographic cone which has enough venom to kill roughly 700 people. Textiles while less venomous are still more than potent enough to put you under. Some people think that their firing arc is limited to the front of the shell, but this is only true while the snail is inside shell as the harpooning mechanism is actually on a flexible proboscis, so if you see a funny stick coming out of the snail you’re in for a world of pain.
