I don’t know why I kept it at the time. I was just keeping room keys as a collection of the places I had visited. None of the other ones had any real identifying marks. I was actually supposed to stay here again in October of 2001 but obviously that didn’t happen and they moved us to another hotel. My dad’s theory was “well, this is probably the safest time to ever fly and visit NYC” because security was so heightened. It was surreal seeing the difference from 2000 to less than a month after 9/11.

It’s an eerie feeling to recall 9/11 and how many people know exactly where they were that heard the news. It’s like a shared memory.
