I’ve been watching some of these civilians trying to help video blogs, and you know some are like we got turned away from delivering supplies narrative, and I know and can understand how they feel the way they do, but I just don’t know how to bridge that gap and effectively e plain to people that just bc you have a good heart and intentions and want to help, that by just not showing up and trying to do what you can is not always helpful and a lot of times just mucking up the situation for the authorities and people with the training, knowledge and resources. The govt does not need your pallet of water bottles, that’s not the actual thing needing worked through. So if your outside the area, like you can’t walk out your door, or walk the river bank looking for victims, don’t just drive 6 hours into the area thinking your helping, do what you can from where you are, if they need bob from Alabama for personnel, they will ask, they have plans, of which a very multiagency and practiced plan that stems from the lessons learned from 9/11. But they don’t need bob with a chainsaw. They activate the resources they need through command centers an organizational charts that are already in place and written up. I am a wildland firefighter. If people just show up to help, it just takes time and energy and focus away by the authorities. They mean well but it’s counterproductive. We are problem solvers that’s what we do, and we know how to ask for help, and we do ask for help, sometimes we get locals with local knowledge to show us how to get in and out of areas, where water sources still have water at that time of year, who owns that bull dozer I saw in that yard a mile back, and can they operate it for me to open up this road for access, who are the local ranchers and are they willing to form a group and go try to herd the livestock out of the area, etc. etc. Then you will see 5 fire engines on the side of the road somewhere and post on social media how the mountain is burning down, and firefighters aren’t doing anything to help, you don’t have a concept of how to deal with this complex situation safely and effectively, there is organization in chaos. You can take your shovel and head up the hill but you’re going to get burned over and killed along with you and your buddies and make the situation even worse and more dangerous for everybody. If you people don’t know and don’t have training and the right leadership to follow, then don’t panic and try to insert yourself in to the matter.
