tl;dr the French invaded the Saarland in support of Poland in 1939; the attack fizzled out when German troops started streaming West after their victory in Poland. The French wisely retreated back to their own fortifications instead of attempting to assault those of the Germans who would soon outnumber them.
With hindsight, waiting for the Germans to attack was probably the best choice the French and British had, because they anticipated that the Germany would invade through the low countries again, which would add the Dutch and Belgians to their numbers (neither of these countries would have joined in an attack on Germany, but they’d defend their own neutrality). And it’s not like the UK and France did nothing did *nothing* between Poland and France; both sent expeditionary forces to Norway, for instance.
This ‘invasion’ makes the pace the russians are advancing in ukraine look like a rocket

Calling this thing a proper ,,offensive” is a bit of a stretch

Remember when your teacher gave you an F for giving wikipedia as a primary source? Yeah, it was to teach you that your credibility will die the moment you do it in a real life setting.

How did this one get upvoted? If UK and France had invaded in force in September 1939, Germany almost certainly would’ve been *crushed*. Pretty sure no historian would dispute that.
Poland was abandoned and promises were broken. Everyone knows that (or so I thought)

If they’d invaded Germany but actually did a good job of it* The french army was more than capable but the french high command failed at every step. Missed every opportunity, made the worst possible decisions time and again. The french soldier deserved better

Yeah true
But… I wouldn’t call it an “offensive” due to how lackluster it is

Wveryone universely agrees this “invasion” of theirs was a nothingburger and another show of cowardice.

Brother in christ, why is the offensive only an initial 1 month period of an 8 month long [Phoney War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoney_War)?
