India has a common enemy with the west in China but Russia backed them in conflicts with Pakistan, who had US backing. Which made sense at the time. They haven’t forgotten that. They also have close military commonality with Russia due to their comparable proximity, anti British/western sentiment, and a shared desire to check China. They have a precarious position, as such, and are wisely playing the middle in a strategic sense.
Would still love to see a sudden, radical India orientation towards NATO.

India just want to be at position where Switzerland is since era of Great war. India has so much good and bitter shared history with most of those countries. Like India was colonized by East India company and many times Invaded by foreign Invaders so have a dark history with them. Russia came to India’s support while US was backing Pak in Indo – Pak war. Ukraine never stand with India in any matter and even voted against India in almost every UN poll. Isreal is very supportive to India but India also have to maintain it’s relations with middle east. So much is with it so it’s just not fair to blindly choose one side as both sides have both good and bad with them.
