During the reign of the Communist Party leader, Mao Zedong, in China, he had instituted programs and social initiatives meant to revolutionize China’s economy and industrialize the nation by force.

Some of these were known as the Great Leap Forward, followed by the Cultural Revolution, which lasted until his death (he ruled for life).

During the GLF, harsh grain and iron quotas were instituted, which were often overfilled while depleting resources, and millions of workers were mobilized to participate in the mass labor colonies and communal farms. The result led to the Chinese Famine, the second deadliest in human history.

After a falling out with the party and a decrease in influence due to this event, Mao instituted the Cultural Revolution, which was a period of mass purges on intellectuals, political rivals, party members, landowners, and anyone the Party accused of counter revolutionary behavior.

In total, death estimates from Mao’s Great Leap Forward are around 30 to 45 million. From the Cultural Revolution, it is estimated 1 to 3 million were killed.
