The Hierapolis’ Ploutonion in Turkey, was a 2nd cent. BC sanctuary dedicated to the God Pluto. It’s built on top of a cave which emits toxic gases, and in ancient times it was believed to be the gateway to the hell as animals, led into the cave by Roman priests, would die of asphyxiation [1600×3276]
