That’s not an inaccurate reading of Asuka, at least in how she behaves towards Kaji, but her primary source of validation and self-worth is in her status as an Eva pilot. Once Shinji surpasses her and her confidence is shot from the back to back defeats by Bardiel and Zeruel is when she really starts her downward spiral, and her plummeting sync test scores as a result just compound that. It’s ultimately when she hits a sync rate of 0%, not the loss of Kaji, that leads her to attempt suicide – her not being able to pilot takes away the one thing she felt gave her any worth at all.
Now as to why she throws herself at Kaji and her relationship with Shinji… well that’s a whole other can of worms.
