People reacting to the new rule against drinking and driving, 1980s

    1. Communism! Communism I say! If we aren’t allowed to get blistering drunk behind the wheel and endanger everyone around us, we cannot be free and therefore this makes America communist! Why everyone knows that Karl Marx himself was inspired by seeing a carriage driver drinking whiskey, mowing down a crowd of people on a busy street – and that’s when he thought – “aha! I’ve got a wonderful idea for a new system of government!”

    2. Yeah, nothing says old school cool like getting shitfaced, driving and then ploughing over a 3 year old.

      >”Pretty soon we’re gonna be a communist country!”

Yeah, I mean if they let gays get married pretty soon they’ll force us all to be gay! And how ’bout them so-called “ellee dee” light bulbs they’re jammin’ down our throats?

    4. In 1979 I worked in rural southeastern Colorado along US 50 which is a mostly straight road for over 120 miles with only a few towns. My local coworkers measured distance in beers. It was a 6-pack to Pueblo but only 3 beers to Lamar.

You had to be barely in control to get a DWI (they didn’t call it DUI until much later).

The last comment in the video declaring seat belts communism is similar to calling Harris communist this year despite her utter lack of controlling proposals.

    5. My dad has never been much of a drinker but I definitely remember him driving around with an open beer in the 70s. I also remember my parents watched this TV show about a drunk driver who killed someone and my dad said he would never do that again and I never saw a beer in the car from that day on.

    6. Ah the days when you could drive around Corona, Texas in your Toyota Corona drinking a Corona.

Reminds me of that scene from Trailer Park Boys when Ray says, “Some guys can drink and drive, some guys can’t. I mean, what is drunk?”

    8. I remember when the seat belt law came out and people said they’d rather be thrown from of the car. I lived in a small town.

Even back then the people yelling Communism had no idea what the word actually means.

      >Pretty soon we’re going to become a communist country.

The notion that communist countries didn’t drink and drive speaks volumes about not what was actually happening in those communist countries, but rather what the US propaganda machine brainwashed people into thinking was happening. Reflect on that…

    11. We got busted in the early 80’s with a 12-pack of beer and 4 open containers. None of us older than 16. Cop just made us dump out the beer, confiscated the rest of the remaining beers and sent us on our way with a stern warning. The driver got a ticket for not having a front license plate. Cop said that if your parents hassle you about the ticket, tell them why you really got pulled over.

    12. I love that the “pretty soon we’re gonna be a communist country” line has been used for at least the last 50 years yet America is no closer to communism at all.

If anything America turned the dial to 11 on capitalism.

Dumbass people propagandised so much they spout this nonsense yet probably couldn’t define communism if you asked them.

to be fair about her stupid-sounding communist comment, this was the 80’s and the Soviet Union was still in full force and still enemy #1. Back then “communism” = No freedom, No Choice, and a threat to democracy around the world. It’s still a stupid comment about drunk driving, but at least put it in context for being 40 years ago. When people say it today, it makes no sense because we all look at Russia and China as forms of dictatorships and not communism.
