In 1979 I worked in rural southeastern Colorado along US 50 which is a mostly straight road for over 120 miles with only a few towns. My local coworkers measured distance in beers. It was a 6-pack to Pueblo but only 3 beers to Lamar.
You had to be barely in control to get a DWI (they didn’t call it DUI until much later).
The last comment in the video declaring seat belts communism is similar to calling Harris communist this year despite her utter lack of controlling proposals.

My dad has never been much of a drinker but I definitely remember him driving around with an open beer in the 70s. I also remember my parents watched this TV show about a drunk driver who killed someone and my dad said he would never do that again and I never saw a beer in the car from that day on.

We got busted in the early 80’s with a 12-pack of beer and 4 open containers. None of us older than 16. Cop just made us dump out the beer, confiscated the rest of the remaining beers and sent us on our way with a stern warning. The driver got a ticket for not having a front license plate. Cop said that if your parents hassle you about the ticket, tell them why you really got pulled over.

to be fair about her stupid-sounding communist comment, this was the 80’s and the Soviet Union was still in full force and still enemy #1. Back then “communism” = No freedom, No Choice, and a threat to democracy around the world. It’s still a stupid comment about drunk driving, but at least put it in context for being 40 years ago. When people say it today, it makes no sense because we all look at Russia and China as forms of dictatorships and not communism.
